Preparing for Thingadailies

February is Thingadailies month, during which participants make something and post about it every day. In keeping with what I've done in recent years, I'm going to use this month to force myself to learn a new skill. This year, it's creating images from 3D models using DAZ Studio.

I'm going to create a 28-day webcomic.

The learning curve here is pretty steep, which is my way of saying my results are going to completely suck, especially in the beginning. Things I have to learn:

  • How to manipulate and place objects. Seriously, every time I try to move things around, I have to go watch a video. Eventually it will be automatic, but I'm not there yet.
  • How to light the shot.
  • How to frame the shot.
  • Creating characters. Characters wearing clothes. (You laugh, but... This is unexpectedly difficult!)
  • How to render it properly.
  • Story: I'm used to writing books. Doing a scene in four panels is a skill I don't yet have.
Limitations:
  • Money: In a perfect world, I would buy packs of clothes, expressions, poses, locations, characters, etc. But that shit's expensive and my book income isn't going to cover it.
  • I am going to have to buy the Daz Dog 8, so that's $25 unless I stick a person on all fours and tell my readers to use their imagination. (I'd love to get the Labrador overlay thingy for the Daz Dog 8, but that's another $20 and let's be real... I'll probably never use it after February.)
  • I'm also going to have to buy a couple locations/backgrounds. I think I can really cheap out here, but it's probably another $20.
  • Time: My goal is to spend 30 minutes or less every day doing this. Okay, at least less than two hours.
Anyhow, expect a lot of shots of the back of characters (so their blank expressions aren't visible), possibly cut off at the shoulders to disguise the fact that they have no clothes. Honestly, everything is going to be terrible. Absolutely terrible.

You've been warned!
